Mobile Application Design (Oct 2014 - Nov 2014)
Finalist of the Citi Mobile Challenge US 2014
Role: UX Designer

Team member: Sehwan Park (UX Designer)

Project Brief

Sehwan and I applied to the Citi Mobile Challenge, which is a virtual competition designed to bring together developers to accelerate digital banking innovation with the power of Citi's Mobile Banking Platforms. With mobile innovations, changing the way people connect, shop, save, and more, we were to come up with solutions that will harness the power of mobile and transform user experiences.

The Proposal

SWIPAY proposes a secure purchasing system that solves security issues and complications that often arise when shopping on mobile devices. It deliverers a simple interface that is safe, convenient and timesaving. The application requires a one-time input of their personal and credit/debit card details with a fingerprint registration. The user can then shop all they want with quick and simple purchasing experience.

The Problem

"Entering personal information to numerous sites can be a hassle."

Traditional ways of purchasing online, whether it’d be through PC’s or smart devices, involve users having to insert their credit card details such as security numbers and billing addresses, for every site prior to making a payment.  Our solution differentiates from current offerings, as the card information will not be shared or provided to these shopping sites.

Target User

Target user for SWIPAY is anyone who enjoys online shopping experience. Many people would like to take this experience outside their personal computers. We believe this application will immediately draw attention from those online shoppers on the go, because it is simple, convenient and completely safe.

Design Process

After brainstorming some ideas, we decided to just get out and learn about how people interact when shopping online and why. Some questions involved what sites they use? When do they use them? What do they purchase? And what are the reasons behind their behaviors?

User Experience

Making payments on shopping sites or apps can be as easy as pie.

Final Design

The highlight of this applications is the intuitiveness of the swiping action on the credit card's magnetic strip, after placing one finger on the home button. SWIPAY requests users the minimum time and effort to completing online purchases. Personal details will be stored in a safe place and will bring up the card details each time user goes through a check-out on your smartphone. Additionally, transactions can be managed easily with one transactions history, for all registered cards.

As one of the finalists, Sehwan and I presented our solution with on-device prototype at Demo Day in New York, November 12, 2014.

Future Opportunities

Customer data, such as their shopping patterns can be analyzed to give smart suggestions in future spendings. Citibank also gains the partnership opportunity with offline vendors.
